Index Profile of Mr David Lovatt - Queen's College's new Headmaster

Date : 07 March 2011

MR David Lovatt has been appointed as Headmaster of Queen's College Boys' High School with immediate effect.

Hematriculated from Roosevelt High School and obtained an HDE in Physical Education from Wits University and a subsequent B.Ed Honours in Educational Management and Leadership from RAU. More recently he completed an intensive management programme in School Leadership at the Wits Graduate School of Business.

After qualifying as a teacher David Lovatt taught Geography, Physical Education and Life Skills at Roosevelt High School for twelve years. He was appointed as Head of Department, Educational Guidance during this time.

In 1998 he was appointed Deputy Headmaster at Uplands College where some of his responsibilities included: Head of Boarding, Academic Head, Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Coach of 1st cricket team and 1st rugby team, as well as overseeing the buildings and grounds.

In 2005 he was appointed Second Master of the prestigious all boys' boarding school, Hilton College. Within three years he was appointed Headmaster. After a brief stint as Headmaster, he elected to stand down as Headmaster and pursue a career in Educational Consulting.

He soon realised, however, that his true passion lies in dealing directly with young people and that he would be able to make a greater contribution to education in South Africa by returning to the State sector.

He firmly believes that schools need to be extensions of their communities, and that an environment needs to be created where all role players (teachers, parents, contractors, boys, old boys and governors) combine to create a school that has a holistic approach to education.

This will only be achieved if the school has a strong set of core values, underpinned by excellent discipline and good manners. Added to this must be the development of environmental awareness and sustainability, coupled with a strong sense of community service.

He is a keen sportsman, having played Premier League rugby and cricket although he now confines himself to less energetic sports, like golf and jogging. David has had a very active coaching career and has coached the Gauteng Lions and Pumas Craven Week and Grant Khomo Week rugby teams. He has also been known to make cameo appearances in school drama productions and enthusiastically supports cultural activities.

David is married to Janine, a high school English teacher. They have three children. Their eldest son, Marc, is a first year student at Rhodes Univerisity, and their second son, Matthew, is in Grade 9. Their youngest is daughter Cayley, who is in Grade 5.

The Lovatt family looks forward to settling in the Eastern Cape and forging a long and prosperous association with Queen's College. After his appointment Mr Lovatt said "I am humbled to be appointed as Headmaster of Queen's College and look forward to the many challenges of heading this historic, traditional school.”

The Queen's family extends a warm welcome to Mr David Lovatt and his family and wishes them a long and fruitful stay at Queen's College.
