While there are references to water polo at Queen's as early as 1929, there was no long-term interest in the sport until 1978 when the first formal report concerning the sports appears in the Queen's Quire. It had been a season of successes and surprises but included accounts of participation in an inter-schools tournament at East London, where the Queen's team was not highly rated, and in the Appletiser competition, where Queen's teams won both their sections.
The following year Waterpolo attracted new players to the point where it was possible to draw up three senior and two junior teams. Douglas Schooling (captain) led a contingent of five Queenians selected for the Border School team, later representing Border at the Kramer League tournament and at the inter-provincial tournament in Johannesburg. The standard of waterpolo in the Border increased steadily into the 1980's and Queen's College's with it.
Facilities
Queen's College no longer has a pool. The municipal pool next to the Astro has been closed for much of the past two years, on and off, and this is largely due to problems with the filtration system and chlorinator. We have very limited time at QCJ pool which is busy every afternoon with swimmers from Queen's Junior and Queen's College. The Polar Bears Club also uses the pool in the afternoons. We have made use of the GHS and Hangklip pools at times.
Mike Boy, who has been the first team coach since 1984 and is assisted by Kim Pearson and Richard de Kramer.
